Kitchen Chronicles

Welcome to Kitchen Chronicles!

For those of us who have always dreamed of remodeling our kitchens but secretly wondered what is actually involved (Is it really worth all that effort?) our time has come. Designed for Life kitchen contest winner, Diane Petrini is willing to let us read her personal diary as she chronicles her six week adventure into a whole new kitchen.

We’ll get to eavesdrop on her experience as she and her husband Joe watch their 1978 kitchen move from demolition through final finishes. Check back for frequent updates as Diane shares the insider experience of working with design professionals and contractors to create a kitchen that truly meets their needs so they can Age in Place!

Our kitchen is complete and it is beautiful. 15 boxes of kitchen items have been unpacked (2 to go) and there is still plenty of room in cupboards and drawers.  I have baked cookies, cooked breakfast and prepared dinners. It is a treat to work in such a functional kitchen. Everyone asks me what my favorite thing about the kitchen is. It is a hard question to answer because there are so many!  The dishwasher drawers...the appliance garage....the lazy susan'...

It has been quite a busy few weeks at the Petrini Household.  The kitchen remodeling has progressed quite nicely with the drywall completed  and the new cabinets installed.   The new floor plan is very functional and the cabinets are beautiful.  Best of all, we can finally appreciate and marvel at the design Lindsay had "seen in her mind month's ago".  While we had seen it on paper, it is finally taking shape.  It has been 6 weeks today since ou...

It has been a busy few days as the Plumber and Electrician work in the kitchen.    Doug from Bill Howe Plumbing and Phil and Erik from LightWorks are working on the transformation of our kitchen.   We are looking forward to the improved lighting to brighten our days! With the old kitchen removed, it is easier to see the "Vision" of our Designer, Lindsay Hester of Hester Interiors.     Universal Design was a new term to me at the start of this contest but I have now le...

It has been an eventful week in the Petrini household as quite a bit was accomplished in a short time.   The old kitchen was quickly demolished and the framing for the new one began in earnest.  The sliding glass doors have been removed to make way for our new door and window and the peninsula for the new kitchen cabinets was framed.  Joey described the work week as "very organized and efficient".  He appreciated how clean the workspace was kept. We have ...

After a weekend of emptying kitchen cabinets and packing boxes, we met Doug from Bill Howe Plumbing on Monday morning. Doug capped the water lines in the kitchen in preparation of demolition day.  We were ready to start.   Bright and early on Tuesday morning, the work began.  Chris Uribe from Wardell Builders along with Foreman George and Robert from Titan Excavating were at our door at 7:00 am.   By the time they left today, the cabinets were removed alo...

Wow! The official “Kick-Off” meeting for our kitchen remodel was yesterday and I couldn't be happier with the results.   Joe and I could not have asked for a better team to design and remodel our kitchen.  Everyone we met was professional, knowledgeable and best of all - FUN!   We met with Liliane Choney, Executive Director of ReVisions Resources who coordinates the Designed for Life Contest; Jean Rudman and Barry Fennell of Wardell Builders; Steve Clark of Cabinetry Design; Tr...
